The College of Nursing and Health offers a Global Health Service Learning Course in Tanzania every other spring break. The first course took place in Summer 2013. The School of Nursing at Muhimbili University College of Nursing and Health (MUHAS) is the local host university in Tanzania. The course is interprofessional with preference given to pre-nursing and nursing majors. The students are given various opportunities to work with local health care centers and social agencies in Dar Es Salaam and adjacent communities. The service experiences include both experiential and observational learning. In the Summer of 2013, students were able to participate in health teaching sessions in the orphanage, home visits, and one on one HIV counseling sessions.
Applications are open in the Fall Semester of every academic year. Students are responsible for the cost of the trip, which is typically around $1,800. Students must attend five seminar classes before the trip and complete all the course requirements. It is important for students to be current in their immunizations. More information about the recommended immunizations can be found at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
